Because I Said So – Dad Edition – Naming Your Kid

ImageChef Word Mosaic - ImageChef.com

For this week’s ‘Because I Said So’ MammDJane and I will be answering a question submitted by an anonymouseader r.  They sent me an email and asked how I decided what to name my daughter.  I am not sure how MammDJane is going to answer but I thought I would give some tips on how to name your kid and let you decide to what to take away.

Don’t

  • Don’t name your kid after a celebrity.  Just because Eric Church (country artist) or Robert Pattinson (Twilight) or Kim Kardashian (reality star) are popular now, does not mean they will be when the your kid is older.  That is not to say Eric, Robert, and Kim are not great names.  Just don’t let them be the reason you name your kid that.
  • Don’t name your kid after a month, a season, or a weather condition.  I am not bashing anyone named April, Summer or Snow but try to avoid it.
  • Avoid cartoon characters, movie characters, or songs names.
  • Avoid unique spellings.  Just because you think it is clever, probably means hell for your kid.

Do

  • Think of every rhyme for the name you are considering because some little punk kid will.
  • Pick something that means something. If your Nana was named Summer, Loreli, or Jakob that negates all the above rules.

My daughter’s name is Danielle.  She was named after her grandfather (my wife’s dad).  His name is Danny.  She is called Danni.  All this from a guy who answers to the name Buck Rogers.

Head over to MammDJane to for her take on this week’s Because I Said So – Mom Edition.  According to an recent article, 5 New Considerations Parents Must Make When Naming A Baby, you should look up and see if the name you choose is an available domain, twitter handle, and/or a vanity Facebook.

Do you have any tips? What you name your kid and why?

I love the name Danni! But, of course, I would since I am her mimi.

But, I hate my name…for many of the reasons you stated above. My parents thought the spelling was clever and it has been the albatrous around my neck for almost 52 years. I have had to spell it and pronounce almost EVERY day of my life. I grew up in the era of Cheryls, Mollys and Debbies. How I wished for one of those names as a child/teenager. I was named after my Aunt Etta which as I get older makes it a little easier to tolerate. I do think I make a much better De than a DeEtta!

Just glad I married a Jones man…I was a Mickle! But my sister's name is Leathea Drello!

Thanks for letting me vent!

I have to agree with this: Avoid unique spellings. Just because you think it is clever, probably means hell for your kid.

—- BUT never followed it, all three of my children have unique names that NO BODY can spell right and sometimes my DD has to tell everyone how to pronounce her name, so yeah def would have to tell other parents – listen to this and take it from a Mom who didn't listen to this advice ;-)

As for this piece of advice: Think of every rhyme for the name you are considering because some little punk kid will.

— unfortunately that is oh so true!! AND Must be thought of .. although it may not mean I don't name my child that, but it could be a part of the decision making process!

Well, our youngest is named after Carly Simon… so far so good though.

You raise really good points, especially about spelling. My first name is Tom and I usually spell it Thom. My wife is Vicky and she spells it Vickie. Neither one of us can find those neat little license plates when we go on road trips and you can just forget coffee mugs. Thank goodness for Zazzle is all I have to say!

I flipped over to read the social media story on Daily Bits too. Very interesting points there as well. Should we go ahead and snag those vanity URL's for our kids now? HHmmm?

Such a good post from me that you had to comment twice. You shouldn't hate your name but that's just my opinion.

Oh I'm great at dishing out the advice not so good at following it.

Danni is a weird spelling and a boy's name. And I wanted to name her Karma so what's that tell you

I haven't reserved my daughter's yet. Also you should scoop up their gmail accounts too

Well, here's another twist on that theme. When our oldest daughter got married her new given+surname combination wasn't available. Additionally, (even though she doesn't call it branding) she had spent a lot of time, 10 years, working on her brand, she was very sad to give all that up.

So, she kept her original names & domain and (with a little help) has put some redirects in place to point the new names to the old.

As we become a society that values personal branding, I'm wondering if that's going to deal another blow to the practice of changing names when you marry. I know most of the female lawyers that I've worked with either don't change their name, or keep their maiden name in the name they market for this very reason.

hhmm, interesting stuff. Love to hear some ladies thoughts on this too.

ROFL! Oh so you are much like me .. I am super great at giving everyone advice but horrible about following it ;-) Loved this post though! Having fun reading along, I already know a lot about @mommadjane but now get to learn more about you as well. Very awesome that you two are doing this!

If I get married I won't change my name. Not really because of branding but because I am a single mother and my children have my maiden last name. Even when I was married six years ago I still carried both names. I would be willing to hyphenate my name but the Perrin will always stay. I want to match my kids. Although branding is a very good point too. I just think I am branding myself as MommaDJane instead of my full name.

Great topic and lots of good points being discussed.

Aren't we all rebels? LOL

mommadjane November 1, 2009 at 10:28 pm

DeEtta: I completely understand your frustration. I have had to fix other people's fixes of my name all my life. My name is Dwan and everyone takes it upon themselves to 'fix' the typo that doesn't exist. They automatically read it and see Dawn. Just habit I guess. I have to spell it and pronounce it. I've gotten pretty good at just saying “like Swan with a D”. However, I do love my name and wouldn't change it. It's just me. It has just become normal to hear people call me Dawn at times.

mommadjane November 1, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Wow don't we see differently on this topic? Pretty funny actually. I think we were complete opposites. It is nice to have different view points to shine the light on the subject. Great discussion going on this week too. I'm loving it!

Although my name came from a movie I can't say I was named after the actress. Matter of fact I don't even remember the actress' real name. My parents just heard the name Dwan and liked it. That is the same way I felt about the name Tapanga. I just really loved the name so went with it for my daughter. But in many ways I am glad it isn't popular, that's what makes her different. She is 12 now and doesn't hate it yet. I used to get frustrated with always correcting people with my name but I never wanted to change it. Maybe I'm weird, LOL. No comment needed on that either Buck :) .

I love the branding topic of saving your child's name via domain. I heard that at the conference SITScation last month and think it's a great idea. Look at Ted Murphy still trying to buy tedmurphy.com. I'll be checking into that soon for mine.

Can't wait until next week to see what the discussion will be like. I'm enjoying this!
