Wanted: Santa Claus

For this week’s Because I Said So, MommaDJane and I are going to discuss: Santa Claus.

How do you feel about Santa: do you teach your kids to believe or not? If so then is the main (or most expensive) gift from Santa in your home?

I think my wife would murder me and hide the body if I had decided to not teach our daughter about Santa.  I grew up believing in Santa.  I also had a younger brother and was told if I stopped believing that Santa would stop coming.  So I still believe in Santa.

I have read all sorts of various opinions on the subject.  I don’t disagree with those whose choose to not believe or teach their children to not believe.  That is their choice.  Just like believing is my choice.

My daughter is 3 and this is her first Christmas to really understand what is going on.  She asks a lot of questions.  “How does Santa get into our house? If Santa is watching me, where is he? If Santa is so big, how does he fit down the chimney?”  I tell her it is Christmas Magic.  I think to not help her believe is to take a piece of her innocence away.  Children grow up too fast as it is.

As far as if the main gift is concerned, I think that is going to come from Santa.  It did when I was growing up.  I know that gives Santa all the credit but I am okay with that.

Do you teach your kids to believe? If so, why?  If not, why?

I wonder if MommaDJane has been good for goodness sake.  Let’s go see.

Interesting that you wrote about this today. TechyDad also did something similar on his blog. We have been trying to figure out as a Jewish family what to do when our sons ask/hear something at school.

I will have to go check that out. I am not sure that I could be any help as I am Catholic

Cool topic. This is the time to enjoy them. They do grow up so fast, and as they grow older, the imaginary things seem to be so silly to them. Don't blame your wife for thinking that way.

There is a Santa, has always been a Santa, and will ALWAYS be a Santa in my house! It's just too much fun for me! You were right about my reaction if you didn't go along with it!

I teach my children about Santa and I do believe. I think it's wonderful for children to have something to believe in, some kind of magic. It's even nice to have parents have some hope and magic to believe in! I love this post and have to agree with both you and MommaDJane. I have a 3 year old this year too, and he hasn't asked too much yet about Christmas but it IS his first year to realize it's Christmas time and to know Santa is coming, he is actually really fun this year about the whole magic of the season!

I taught my kids that Santa is fake, but it is different for us. I have also taught them not to go around telling the other kids that he isn't real. It hasn't always worked, but we do what we can.

I must agree with you Mrs. Buck Daddy. It is so much fun to play Santa in my house and I think I will always at least stuff stockings for my kids even when they are grown.

Kids do grow up way to fast. I completely agree with you on this topic!
