For this week’s Because I Said So, MommaDJane and I are going to discuss: When taking a vacation as a parent, do you take the kids or not?
Since becoming a father almost four years ago, I have been on two vacations. Both times, we have taken our daughter. I couldn’t imagine not going on vacation without her. I remember the first time she saw sand. She was a little younger than one. We put her down on a blanket and she put her toes in the sand. Then she picked it up and ate it.
A couple of weeks ago, we all went to St. Louis. We went to the City Museum, The Zoo, and Lambert’s. I recommend all three. I think the story of throwing roll will be told at her wedding. In fact, the whole vacation was centered around my daughter experiencing St. Louis.
I have been to a numerous conferences for blogging in the last couple of years. I don’t bring her to those for a couple of reasons. First, I am not sure that I could keep her quiet or occupied and not disturb the fellow attendees. Secondly, I am there to learn. I don’t consider them vacations even though they are in Florida and Nevada. Also, they have included days to SeaWorld and shows on the Vegas Strip but that was not the main reason I went to them.
Our vacations are enhanced by my daughter’s presence. Would a vacation be nice with just my wife and I? Perhaps but for now I think we’ll stick with having our daughter along for the fun. With that said, I am not sure I would take her along to a cruise but I know people who have done that and siad the kids had a blast.
I think MommaDJane and I will be on the same page but I am going to check out what she has to say about it all. Why don’t you join me?

So far, we’ve taken all of our vacations with our children. In a couple of months, though, we’ll leave the kids with B’s parents while we go to to BlogHer 2010.

I must admit although I take my kids on several vacations, I am guilty of going on them alone as well. So this week we do sort of disagree. Really I didn’t pick one answer on the question, I chose both. I do agree with you though that seeing your children experience something for the first time is priceless. I just took my kids on a Disney Cruise in April and watching Noah’s eyes seeing the ocean and such a large boat for the first time was great. It was also his first airplane ride and I was more nervous than he was. Those are memories that I’ll cherish forever and they mean more to me then when I go on vacation without them. However getting some time away is a nice break that I need at times.
