Massive Fail and One “You Suck”

by BuckDaddy on November 18, 2008

Over the last week, I have failed in a major way. I tried to buy my own domain (did that), self host (did that) and install WordPress (did that). I then tried to create my new blog and have it on said url. I was going to import all my old blogs. Technology has passed me by with php files and CSS coding. I have no idea how to do any of that. I am used to blogger and the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors. If I want to change the heading on my blog no problem and if I want to change the color of a background, I do it.

Here’s the problems I was having with WordPress and can’t seem to figure out:

  • Setting the homepage as my url not mydomainname.com/wordpress
  • Having pretty permalinks
  • Finding a theme I like. I want 3 columns, one of left, one on right, tabs at the top.
  • Making my image header the main header and not having a image and text header.

So I am throwing in the towel. I tried to do too much. I work full time and have a part time job in retail. I was stressing myself out trying to do the website thing. I had lots of people try to help me. Sharing at Work and Penny Pinching Parent tried, heck One Half Amazing came and visited me in my cube and tried to help. I just don’t have the knowledge to do what I want.

I tried researching it but there is not a tutorial in layman terms to do all that. You have to have working knowledge of CSS and PHP which I do not. I could hire someone but that defeats the purpose and I can’t afford it.

I also was going to do a couple of niche stores powered by Amazon like College Watches or Mid-South Alcoholic Supply Store but I failed at that too. My fellow Memphis blogger Paul does those and he says he makes some money off them but I could not figure out how to do it.

I looked at my visitor stats and they had dropped by 50%. Things are spiraling out of control. I discussed it with Chelsea, my wife, the other day and she said, “Maybe it is because you are beginning to suck.” She then went on to explain that I stopped proof reading my blogs, I am dropping words out of sentences and misspelling words left and right. Chelsea suggested I stick with what I know. Write, funny man, Write. Chelsea also said after we get out of debt that I could take some courses at the University of Memphis and learn what I need to learn.

In the meantime, I am going to get back to what I know which is writing about being a Dad, saving money wherever I can, and just having fun. Oh speaking of saving money,

Restaurant.com is having a huge sale on their gift certificates but only until Thursday, November 20th. I have used this gift certificates on several occasions with the most recent time being at my trip to Blue Fin and when I went to Big Foot Lodge the other night. The program is totally legit, I use it often. The $25 face-value certificates normally sell for $10, but with the 80% off coupon code of SURPRISE at checkout you can buy them for $2.

Enter Discount Code: SURPRISE At Checkout and Hit “APPLY”. There a ton of Memphis restaurants on here including downtown and out east. I know I have readers from all over and these can be used in your area too. Just go to Restaurant.com and search with your area code and it will pull up restaurants in your area.

Another great time is to use them if you are traveling. Just enter the zip code of your hotel or if you know a zip code in area that you vacationing in or traveling to.

Please note that there are some restrictions – in many cases they can’t be used to purchase alcohol, and many restaurants require to spend at least $35 to redeem the $25 face-value gift certificates. Still though, they’re a great deal – you can get $23 worth of food for free if you get in on the sale. You can buy more than one certificate for the same restaurant, but can only use per table per visit.

You can also always use the handy search box on the right and enter your zip code from there and it will take you straight to the listing of the restaurants in your area. Remember Restaurant.com and SURPRISE at checkout to get $25 gift certificates for $2 but only until Monday, November 10th.

Stock up! The ones I bought didn’t come with an expiration date. I am going to hit publish so I can go get some of my own. I’ll be back later with another post. I have my six month review here at works so it might be later in the day. Offer ends Thursday, November 20th. I bought some yesterday for my brother’s birthday and got them for $3 but you can get them for $2 today.

Maybe you just suck :) Too funny. I like your blog now! I think you do a good job, I agree with your wife, keep with what you do now.

No you don’t suck! You got too busy and tried to prioritize is all! I’ve been through ups and downs with mine too. During the summer my stats were thrilling, but after school started they dropped by about 60%! I’ve gotten back up a little, but not where they were before. Keep doing what you do, though! You’re funny and I like to read your words.

And when you figure all that stuff out about self-hosting and designing, could you let me know? I tried to do it, but didn’t even get as far as you. I wound up just picking a new template so I would feel better. lol

Thanks. I took on too much. I figured I could Google what I need to know but still it was too much. I’ll get back to what I do better which is writing. and Thanks again.

Now that you’ve bought the domain names you can probably still use them on top of Blogspot’s free services. I know SharingAtWork.com was running on Blogger for $0 up until last week. I took a look at Amazon stores and I’ll bet you could plug some of those into blogger blogs as widgets or something.

I like your decision to focus on what makes your online content sparkle but I wouldn’t throw away your new domains just yet.

Thanks Daniel. I appreciate all the help you gave me yesterday. I also don’t know how to make the url and use bloggers free system but I can Google it I am sure.

Growing pains, that’s all. You don’t suck. Not even a little. :-)

The content is what people come here for anyway!

I was thinking about switching to Wordpress, but I know I don’t have the time (or skill set) to do what I want with it. My theory is that Blogger will continue to make improvements, and in the end, we’ll all be glad we’re on Blogger (and laughing at the WP fools paying for stuff!)

Hang in there. You’ve got a good thing here! Blogging definitely works in peaks and values. Try not to watch your stats too much and you’ll be a lot less stressed! :-)

Maybe I take my tech skills for granted. I started with a self-hosted WordPress blog and never looked back.

My hosting company has a “one-click install” feature for WordPress. Maybe that’s the source of my tech savviness. heheh.
