Fatherhood Friday: Becoming your parents

by BuckDaddy on July 24, 2009

Fatherhood Friday at Dad Blogs

I remember vividly in my childhood saying “If I was the parent, I would not do that. In fact, when I become the daddy things will be differently.” Having been the child and now the Dad, I get both sides of the coin.

“Do as I say not as I do”
I was never going to say this. It was just not fair. Why do they get to do it and I don’t. As Dad I see now there is a reason that the kid is not supposed to do it. Be it socially unacceptable like farting or dangerous like crossing the street without holding hands.

“Because I said so!”
This is the big one. I swore up and down I would never say this. I say it constantly. Danni is super curious and wants to know why all the time. Sometimes trying to explain something down to it’s final detail is hard.

So in essence I have become my parents. I apologize mom and dad because I never understood. I understand now.

What do you say that your parents said that you were not ever going to say?

haha I said the same thing, I think most people have. We're much better at parenting before we actually have children.

"Walk. Don't Run. Your gonna fall down and get hurt",

"I promise, this hurts me MUCH WORSE than it hurts you."

Yes we spank our 2 yr old (or give pow pows.)

Lately it has been "cover your mouth when you cough". I said that about a MILLION times last night when we were with our friends and their 2 month old baby.

I, daily, understand my parents parenting skills and appreciate all they did/sacrificed for us.
