#Fatherhood Friday – What I miss about not having a job

by BuckDaddy on February 19, 2010

Fatherhood Friday at Dad BlogsIn my last job, I worked 8a – 5p, Monday through Friday.  With that schedule, I was spoiled.  For several months, I was unemployed.  In that time, I spoiled myself.  With my new job (heck, new career), I work 5 days a week for 10 hours a day.  There is no set days off or weekends off.  Please don’t read that as complaining.  I knew what the terms of the job were before I accepted it.

The issues is in the two months, I didn’t have a job I got used to taking my daughter to mother’s day out and picking her up.  The couple of minutes in the morning was our time together and the time after school was our time too.  We would go ride the carousel at the mall or go get ice cream.  We would go look at books in the bookstore and spend time reading them.  We did a lot of stuff together.  Also, I saw my wife a lot more.

One of the silver linings, I have noticed with my new job is that I sometimes work overnight.  The perk of this is I get to take my daughter to school again.  In fact I am writing this now to kill some time before I have to wake her up and get her ready.  After I get her home, I will be exhausted and fall asleep but I will get to spend some quality time with her.

I think that way too sometimes. But I get to see my 3 girls in the morning as I’m getting the ready to take to school. And personally… That’s enough for me! LOL. Between the fighting, feeding and me doing their hair… I would much rather let the wife deal with that and let me have them when they are already full and content… whenever that is!

Buck,
I get spoiled every time I have a telecommuting day or long weekend, it is so hard to go back to work after that.

It’s all about finding that quality time where it is and enjoying it.

it’s never about the quantity, but definitely the quality. i once had to work two jobs (this was when my ex and i sep) that caused me to be gone about 18-20 hours a day hardly seeing my kids. i made the choice that, even though i would not have a lot of money, being with my kids was far more important. i quit one of the jobs.

My job keeps me on the road many days out of the month. That’s why I value each moment that I can spend with my kids and wife.

Hi Buck,

Well, I think it is quite challenging to go back in an office cubicle after a few months of “rest”. I guess you don’t have that problem :-)

Hope to hear from you soon in our network! :-)
