Dealing with Mean Comments on Your Blog

I sometimes can be found blogging at Dad-o-matic.  Last Friday, I wrote a post called Traveling Dad Doesn’t Have Guilt.  I took some heat in the comments and pushed some people’s buttons.  That was not my intention.  It was supposed to be just a quick post about how I was feeling and what I was going through.  After I read them, I was a little hurt.  It stopped me from blogging.  It almost paralyzed me.   I took a few days away from the computer to figure out how I felt about it.  I put myself out there and I can not expect everyone to feel like I do or to be nice about it.  I also came up with some ways to deal with mean comments on your blog.

  1. Ignore it:  This only works if you are dealing with people that don’t have constructive criticism.  The dads who commented had constructive criticism.
  2. Respond: I responded to each comment with how I felt about what they said.
  3. Apologize: There was one comment that I felt that I truly upset this dad with my post.  I apologized.
  4. Don’t take it personal: I put it out there.  I need to have a thick skin.
  5. Can’t win them all: There is no way I can win every reader over every time.  I am not going to try either.

How would you have dealt with it?  If you read the post and my comments, did I handle it right?  What would you have done differently?
