The first 5k

by BuckDaddy on April 27, 2009

I did my first 5k on Saturday. I thought it was on the 99 Things to Do Before I Die (needs to be updated) but it wasn’t so I get bonus points. I registered, showed up and jogged/ walked my first 5k. It was the Race for Hopes & Dreams Benefiting the Exchange Club Family Center held on Saturday at 9 am. Chelsea and I did it together as well as her mother and a friend.

Actually, it is not first 5k but the first one I did on purpose. 2 years ago when Danni was a couple of months old I did Race for the Cure. I do it ever year but I do the family fun walk. The problem was that you start at the same spot as the runners and somewhere the runners go left and walkers go right.

The whole family went left. I had a 5 month old strapped to my chest and my wife had her purse and diaper bag. Any new parent will tell you that they pack too much stuff in the first couple of months. There is a reason 5k runners don’t strap 20lbs of stuff to them and do 5k because it is hard.

Anyways of our group, I came in dead last. To make it even worse I came in 129 of 134 (which you might have already know if you were my facebook friend). The whole race there was cop car behind me picking up cones to let traffic resume. I think there was an old lady on a rascal going faster than me. But I did finish and I will do better next time. Big ups to my wife for smoking me. I might even join the Memphis Runners club and we are planning on doing another next month.

Congrats, Buck! If it makes you feel better: People always remember those who either came in first or finished dead last. And you are in good shape because you finished the latter.

No but seriously, it was still impressive to do something like that. 129 of 134 – you still finished. While you were running and accomplished a life goal, I was playing RE5 and listening to the draft on the internet. So who is the winner here?
