A couple days ago, I checked the progress on last year’s resolutions. I didn’t meet them all but it did bring about an idea that I had been kicking around in my head. I am going to make only 1 goal. It will be a pass or fail.
My New Year’s Goal is to participate in the St. Jude Marathon in December of 2010. Notice I said participate not compete or run. To complete this one resolution I will have to train. Through the training, I plan on some secondary goals being accomplished.
- Lose weight- Right now as of this writing, I weigh about 292lbs. I have not seen my toes in the shower in a very long time.
- 100 consecutive push-ups- As embarrassing as it is to say, I can’t do 1.
- 200 consecutive sit-ups- Again truly embarrassing, I am not sure if I could do 10.
- Run, not jog or walk, 1 mile- Know when they ask your level of activity, I need a separate category. Corpse. Actually corpses probably are more active then me.
- See My Toes- I look down when taking a shower and I can not see my toes. If that isn’t a wake up call I am not sure what is.
I have a couple ideas about how to change my lifestyle. I also know some of the tools I will be using. I am going to update my blog at least once a week with an update on how I am doing. I am going to tweet about it and use the hashtag #newme. If I do this then I am held accountable so I can’t wuss out.
Some of the tools I plan to use:
- treadmill- We bought one last year. When we first got it, I used it.
- Wii
and Wii Fit
- There are tons of games out there. Currently, I have Wii Fit
and Wii Fit Plus. I am thinking getting about EA Sports Active
, Your Shape
, and Wii Sports Resort
. (affiliate links)
- iPhone or iTouch Apps- there are bunch out of there. More on that later
My Food Habits:
- Weight Watchers- I am going to join up and start using the program.
- Genesis Today- I drink a lot of Dr. Pepper. I am going to drink Genesis Today instead of soda all the time. (Full disclosure: From time to time, I do some work for Collective Bias. Genesis Today is their client.)
Holding myself accountable:
On January 1, I will post my weight, BMI, and any other stats I can think of. I will not be posting one of those Biggest Loser pictures without my shirt on. Ever week, I’ll check in with my stats and how I am doing on the main goal and secondary goals.
Join me in #newme project?
It doesn’t have to be about running a marathon or losing weight. What change are you going to make a new you? The best way is to have a support system or a cheering section. Let me know what you are doing. Use the hashtag #newme on Twitter. I’ll be your cheering section.

A few years ago, I got sick of weighing 255. My wife and I didn't want our son growing up overweight so we went on an “unofficial Weight Watchers” plan. (We kept track of points ourselves. Didn't go to meetings or get membership or anything.) I wound up going down to 175 and being told that I was too skinny. (First time in my life I've been called skinny!) I went back up to 185 where I was comfortable.
I learned a lot of things about weight loss when I lost all that weight. I'd say that the most important thing to successful weight loss is a good support network. If people keep offering you sweets and encouraging you to cheat, chances are you will fail. If you fall off the wagon (which will almost inevitably happen at least once) and people don't help you back on, chances are you will fail. Yes, it is possible to go it alone, but it is much, much harder.
Lately, I've gone back up to 205 and really want to lose the weight again. Like you, I was planning on doing a blog series about my weight loss efforts. I'll definitely join you in posting and #newme tweeting.
I have a similar goal and I'll see you at the St. Jude (Half for me) in 2010!
Couch to 5K plan has an iPhone app, which I've purchased and plan to use as I work toward the goal of a 5K in March.
Having my daughter grow up overweight is a concern for me too. My wife went on the offical Weight Watchers plan and had a great success. I am trying to figure out my ideal weight. I am hoping by blogging and going to meeting I will grow a support network.
I am excited that you are taking part in #newme. I am going to start a group in my Google Reader so I can link to your posts about it
Which app did you buy Couch to 5K or C25K? Which 5K are you doing in March? Are you planning posting about your progress?
Mine is C25K – didn't know there was another one. I'm planning to do the In His Steps 5K – it's usually at the end of March – at Christ Methodist (where I'm the mayor – ha!).
As for posting, I probably will. I'm redesigning my site right now and will probably incorporate a category for the c25k. That is, unless I fail miserably and don't want to talk about it anymore
Hmm yeah there are 2 and both are the same price. I will have to do some research. I am thinking of doing a couple of 5Ks as well. When you get it redesigned (and you will I have faith) I look fwd to you postings.
OK, I'm going to check out the other one and see if I like it better. As for the redesign, not likely to meet my January 1 goal as we're still in the Photoshop stage as of now … but soon. I hope.
Let me know and I'll buy the one you recommend
Good going, Buck. I'm all for this. I want to resume cycling to work at least 3 days a week. Subsequent goals are to improve BMI, lose 20 lbs or better, and ride in an organized event.
I'll be following #newme in order to join the cheering section.
Very cool, I haven't riden a bike in probably a decade. Let me know when and where I can cheer you on
Great idea and a wonderful way to build a network of supporters. Count me in. Now if I can just limit the things that I want to work on so that they are not overwhelming.
As for a great 5k training routine. Check out the PodRunner intervals podcast (it's free). They have everything from Couch to 5k to half marathon training. The regular PodRunner podcasts also have great music to listen to when running.
You may also want to check out DailyBurn.com for a great free site to track your performance.
Here's to a #newme in 2010.
You can do it! How do I know? Because, as they say, if I can do it anyone can! Even though I am down almost 70 pounds, I still NEED to lose 20 more and WANT to lose another 10 on top of that. Lately it seems to be hard to get the pounds off. My best piece of advice is commitment…never quit! I plan to keep going until I reach goal even if it takes years!
Thanks for the podcast recommendations. I read about DailyBurn on Mashable and thinking of using it. So many tools out there. Thanks!
Yea for setting these goals to get on track!
I started Weight Watchers right before Thanksgiving and have been doing pretty well. Having it in my head that I have to go weigh in and either be happy or sad in front of a bunch of people really makes me think about what I eat.
Once some of the weight starts coming off I too am going to start training to RUN a 5K. The best 5 I've done have been a combo of walk/jog, which mainly turns into walk since my asthma doesn't want to cooperate.
Can't wait to follow your blog post and see how you're doing!!
You are an inspiration to the whole family
I would love to track your progress, let me know how you are doing? I am looking fwd to losing some weight and feeling better
I'm blogging mine too
I weigh in tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be down 5% soon!!

Even if you aren't which I am sure you are, don't give up
I've got a similar project goin' on at my site and in my life, which you know because you commented on it!
More power to you. You can do it. Fist bump. Or mouse bump, or whatever.
