Avenue Q review, Orpheum Memphis,

by BuckDaddy on October 2, 2008

Tuesday night, Chelsea and I went to the Orpheum here in Memphis. We went to dinner before at Bluefin. I’ll write a review later on as part of my 99 Things to do before I die list. We used a $25 gift certificate I bought off of Restaurant.com. I used a code and got it for $4. So our $65 meal really cost us $38 including tip. Next time there is a code I’ll post it here and I would strongly suggest buying a gift certificate. Buying them is part of my bailout plan.

I would highly recommend Avenue Q. If you haven’t bought tickets, I think tickets are still available. I would highly recommend the show. My wife summed it up pretty well when she said “It was a musical for guys.”

If you have seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall than this will look familiar. Avenue Q is a puppet show for adults. Do not bring your kids. The whole show takes place in New York on Avenue Q. There are lots of nods to Seaseme Street. Being a parent I got a lot of those jokes because I watch a lot of Elmo. The best comparison I have to it is Crank Yankers and even that doesn’t do it justice. This show was hilarious.

It is not an all ages show. Heck, the puppets have sex. The sex is graphic and in every position imaginable and even some that I would think impossible. The humor is adult. I didn’t get offended and neither did my wife but we knew that is was going to be like that. I didn’t see anyone get up and leave. I don’t stress this so that you are turned off of the show but would hate for you to go to it and expect something else.

Just to give you a hint, look at the names of the songs:

• It Sucks To Be Me
• If You Were Gay
• Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist
• The Internet Is For Porn
• I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today
• You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want
• Schadenfreude

Avenue Q beat Wicked for the Tony and I would say rightfully so. I really enjoyed this show. If you can’t take my word for it I have included a couple YouTube videos of my favorite performances from the show. Also I have included Amazon and iTune links if you want to download the songs before you go to the show.
