Potty Tranining for Toddlers- Signs they are ready

by BuckDaddy on July 30, 2009

When your child is ready you will know but here are 8 signs that my daughter, Danni, showed that she was ready.

  1. She wet or pooped in her diaper about the same time everyday usually following a meal.
  2. When I went to the bathroom she always wanted to come with me. She would imitate me in the even though she didn’t have the proper equipment.
  3. Asked a ton of questions about what I was doing in the bathroom and what was what.
  4. She woke up every morning with a dry diaper meaning she could hold it throughout the night.
  5. She was able to pull her pants and diaper up and down.
  6. She let me know that she had gone in her diaper. “Daddy, you need to change me.” This always seemed to happen when I was in a rush to get out the door.
  7. Wanted to do things by herself. “I can do it.”
  8. Got highly upset if things were not in the right place. Like her shoes.

I'd challenge one of your points. Dry night time diaper isn't a sign of readiness to day train. Night time "training" isn't really about training and is more about physiological readiness. Children can be day trained months and months before their bodies are ready to go an entire night without urinating. Parents don't need to wait until their child's bladder is ready for night time duration before working on day time training. Children gain night time readiness between the months of 24-40 months; that's a 16 month span!

Just passing on info! Our older son was night time ready about five months after he was day trained.

Thanks, I guess every kid is different but glad to have the info. Danni has been night time trained for awhile. I wasn't saying that you need all the points. I was saying that these are some signs that I noticed.

Thanks for the correct answer

I can't wait until Danni is old enough to read your blog. Please write an entry chronicling her reaction.
