I wrote about Nintendo DS Personal Trainer: Walking in my Father and Daughter Take a Walk Post. Well Nintendo decided to send me the game to review. I have walked around with it for a week and my wife has too.
Nintendo DS Personal Trainer: Walking is my kind of “game.” I put game in quotes because it really not a game but more of a tracker. Before I received this game from Nintendo, I wore a pedometer and wrote my steps in my planner and then entered it on a website. By the time, I was done, I was left exhausted and not caring about looking at my data.
The Nintendo DS Personal Trainer: Walking comes with two real cool pedometers. The pedometers don’t have physical rockers counting the motion of my steps but instead has a chip based motion sensors so there is less rattling and more accurate step count.
The pedometers have an internal clock and kept track of my steps not just daily but down to the minute. This feature is something I really could use. By walking for a week, I realized that there is hours at work that I don’t move. No wonder I am gaining weight.
There are a couple of mini modes with the game that utilize your data. One of them, you walk to world and unlock landmarks and animals or the world. In the week or so that I have had the game, I have unlocked about 5 of the 100 items. The other one was light up a town but after a couple of days that was completed.
The only thing, I had an issues was with the wireless connection. It kept asking for my for WEP key. I gave up and skipped the online components. This is not the fault of the game but more the DS itself. That is the only complaint that I had.
The other thing I like is that the game talks crap to you. It also compares you to other players that are using the same unit as you. It highly motivates me when the video game tells me, my wife is doing better than me. Speaking of my wife, you should check out her review of Nintendo DS Personal Trainer: Walking below
Buck’s Wife Chelsea POV:
Having spent the last year on a weight loss journey, I was really looking forward to this game. Over the years I have tried several pedometers and walking programs. Most never work properly, some take too much effort, but all were boring. Well, the Nintendo DS Personal Trainer: Walking is nothing like those other problems. There was no measuring or programming of the pedometers, and very little setup on the Nintendo DS itself.
It is so much easier to just throw on a pedometer every morning without having to press any buttons or resetting the day. Each day starts out with a little red light blinking but when you reach your target steps, it turns green. Such a subtle light change gives me such pleasure! I find myself excited to input my step rhythm at night and see exactly how many steps I’ve taken.
Unlike other systems, the Nintendo DS Personal Trainer: Walking keeps track of time and frequency, as well as what type of walking you are doing. I love playing with my records in the two games included, Walk the World and Illuminate. I find myself wanting to walk more just so I can beat my husband! It is truly a sneaky way of getting my exercise in each day. After a week of walking with the system, I can’t imagine use a boring pedometer again!

Great review! The competitive factor is really a motivator. I'm the only one using mine, but when I get a dog again, it's going to be exciting to see how far he goes compared to me on the same walk. But I do look forward to getting mine online each night to see how I rank in the world. Best I did was #2. I tried to find an online community for discussing the game, but having found nothing, I just started a blog here:
